Winter driving tips from Larry H. Miller Super Ford Salt Lake City

The weather outside is frightful here in Salt Lake City and in Utah, as well. This can create treacherous driving conditions, even for the experienced snow driver. So for those of you who have to brave this winter wonderland, the Larry H. Miller Super Ford team put together some helpful tips for driving in winter conditions.
First of all, it's important that you keep a few items in your vehicle in case you need them:
  • Ice scrap
  • Tire chains
  • Small shovel or ice pick
  • Water supply
  • A flashlight
  • Gloves, coats and blankets
  • Signal devices, such as a flare
One thing that will make a tremendous impact on your ability to grip the road in slippery conditions is your tires. Snow tires should be applied to your vehicle to help you get the maximum amount of traction. It's also important to keep your tires properly inflated. Remember, your tires are the only part of the vehicle that touches the road!
Here are a few driving tips that will also help you stay out of trouble in icy and snowy conditions:
  • Slow down! This might seem obvious, but your ability to stop and stay in control depends upon your speed.
  • Brake gently and leave plenty of room. If your wheels lock up, or you feel your vehicle sliding when attempting to stop, pump your brakes--don't stand on them.
  • Steer in the direction you want your front end to go. If your rear wheels slide left, gently turn the wheel left. If your rear wheels slide right, gently turn to the right to gain control.
  • 4WD or AWD vehicles perform much better in the snow than other vehicles.
  • Don't panic! If you feel your vehicle start to slide, don't try to over-correct the situation. Pump your brakes and use gentle maneuvering to steer the vehicle.
We wish you all a safe and happy 2014! Plan ahead and be careful out there!
